State of the Student Address announces change

On Feb. 2, Associated Student Government President Nick Lopez announced a number of changes for Mesa State in his State of the Student Address, in the College Center ballroom.
The changes may greatly affect Mesa State students. These include improvements to the Montrose campus, a restructuring of student government to better represent the student body and the decision as to whether MSC will become a university.
“There’s been a lot of buzz and excitement about it all, especially regarding the possibility of Mesa becoming a university,” Lopez said.
Lopez noted that even if MSC becomes a university, the values that make it unique will not change. Any possible changes would come in the form of increased enrollment and diversity as well as better name recognition for the college outside of Colorado, all of which would be positive changes.
“Colorado has a certain mystique to it,” said Lopez. “By becoming a university in Colorado we would hope to increase recognition as a top institution all over the country.”
In addition to a possible name change, ASG will hold a vote for students to decide on changes to MSC’s student government constitution. If the constitution does change it will be the first time since 2002, Lopez said.
According to the State of the Student Address, ASG’s proposal for the constitution is to create a “proportional representation system that will allocate seats in the senate based on the number of students within a department.”
In essence, students in every major at MSC would have representatives through which their concerns could be voiced.
ASG also made it clear that they would address concerns of students who attend the Montrose campus of MSC. Montrose campus students pay the same student fees as students in Grand Junction, even though they do not have direct access to the same services or facilities. Lopez said that ASG would work to give Montrose students access to workout facilities and would also help in asking for community support in funding a $1 million renovation of the Montrose Campus.
