New attitudes for a start to a healthy semester

With spring break approaching, it’s time to shed a few extra pounds and get into shape. The Wellness Team at Mesa State has created a program to promote a healthy lifestyle and help achieve weight loss goals.
New Attitudes is a six-week program designed to help facilitate New Year’s resolutions and to implement Wellness Team goals, increase MSC faculty and staff awareness and participation in fitness and wellness activities.
A $15 registration fee includes a fitness assessment, nutrition assessment, two personal training sessions, optional excursions, group discussions about wellness topics and more. At the end of six weeks, the person or team (of no more than two members) who loses the most body fat will receive half of the donations, while the other half will be donated in the winner’s name to the Food for Kids Backpack Program.
Last semester, many students and faculty participated in another program that the Rec Center offered called the Survivor Fitness Challenge. This program was similar to the new program being offered. By high demand, the Rec Center and Wellness Team joined together to create this improved program that offers more to its participants.
Manager of Wellness and Group Fitness, Emily Sanger is one of the minds behind these innovative programs.
“The neat thing about it is that the Rec Center isn’t keeping a dime. This just goes to show that we really are looking out for the well being of our community, not just trying to make money off college students who already have little to no money,” Sanger said.
While the Rec Center is involved in helping improve and promote such programs, the Wellness Team was the creator of this program. Consisting of students and staff, the Wellness Team is a program that promotes health and wellness in the community, positively model proper lifestyle choices, provide easily accessible and appropriate resources and engage the MSC community.
“The Wellness Team really gets full credit for this program,” Sanger said. “They came up with the idea and designed the whole thing on their own. We were here to guide them and help them when they needed it, but it is really the positive influence they wanted to promote that created this program.”
The Rec Center is also offering an Indoor Equilateral Triathlon on Mar. 5.
Registration for New Attitudes begins Feb. 7. The challenge begins Feb. 21. Contact the MSC Wellness Committee at 248-1041 or visit the Rec Center for details.
