Ladies win pair of key conference games

The Mesa State women’s basketball team had a successful weekend, picking up two conference wins over Nebraska-Kearney and Chadron State.
Friday night did not start well for the Mavs. The team fell behind 14 points to the Lopers in a turnover plagued first half.
Kelsey Sigl dominated all night, scoring 23 points, 15 of which came in an impressive second half comeback. Mesa State started the second half with a 19-4 run to get back into the game and kept it close the rest of the way.
Sharaya Selsor also played well, putting up 15 points, and hitting three three-pointers, two of which were crucial to the second half comeback. As a team, Mesa State shot a 55% from three-point land.
Down the stretch it was a back-and-forth game with the teams exchanging leads. Sigl made a crucial layup with 16 seconds to go to give the Mavs a 71-70 lead, and Alaina Brennan sealed the victory with some key free throws to give the Mavericks a 73-70 victory.
The Mavericks followed their Friday night victory and cruised to a win over the Chadron State Eagles on Saturday evening. Sigl played great again, scoring 26 points in 28 minutes of action, doing most of her damage in the second half where she scored 18. The Mavericks free throw shooting was the real story of their Saturday night win, going 15-15 in the first half and shooting 84% overall in the game. Sigl alone went a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line. The Lady Mavs defense also played well forcing Chadron State into 17 turnovers and out-rebounded the Eagles by 11. Katrina Selsor and Hanna Bowden tied with a game-high 7 rebounds. Amy Weitzeil contributed on the offensive end, hitting all six of her free throws and going 3-4 from three.
With a 14-7 overall record, the ladies will travel to Las Vegas, NM to play New Mexico Highlands Friday night. They return home Feb. 25 to take on Adams State.
