E-zine bring awareness

Mesa State College students, faculty and staff have a new magazine delivered to them every month. Don’t bother checking the mailbox though. The magazine, Student Health 101, is delivered via e-mail.

Student Health 101 is a free online magazine. The purpose is to provide insight about not just physical health, but also offers a lot of other features on mental and spiritual wellness.

“It is a good tool to use to learn about all-around wellness,” said Emily Sanger, manager of wellness and group fitness at the Hamilton Recreation Center.

The e-zine can bring a broad array of topics by students for students. This month, the magazine features stories about getting better sleep at night, the precautions of getting a new piercing or tattoo, having a healthy mind and body image.

“Student health is not just about eating healthy and working out, it goes much farther, including spiritual and mental wellness,” Sanger said.

Student Health 101 is a syndicated-type of magazine, but also has a campus correspondent who writes stories about certain topics. The magazine is centered for MSC students, providing information on the front page regarding resources of where to see a doctor, where to work out and other important information about campus.

Student Health 101 can be accessed through the recreation center’s student wellness section on the MSC website. A reference guide helps students that are nervous or embarrassed to visit a doctor to check symptoms, find out what the problem is, and gives some at-home remedies to help with a sickness.

“It is a general health manual put together by qualified physicians to help those that are questioning a sickness or personal issue, like the common cold or addictions,” Sanger said.

The e-zine goes beyond the pages of a typical paperback. It provides links to websites to learn more about a certain health issue, or where they received information. There are also links to take quizzes regarding the issue, to test your knowledge about a topic and watch videos made by students across the country on their thoughts about the stories featured in the magazine. Another feature that the third and fourth page provides is an ‘ask the Doc’ section where a medical director from Wesleyan University’s Davison Health Center answers questions submitted online.

Student Health promotes comments, questions, and suggestions. Sanger is also searching for a student, who could use an internship credit, to report for the magazine. Sanger can be contacted at esanger@mesastate.edu.
