Positivity club rocks for cancer

Saturday night in the new College Center Ballroom began and ended on a high note as Meant for Movement hosted its Second Annual Stay Positive Charity Concert to raise money for St. Mary’s Hospital Cancer Survivorship Program. Signs with sayings such as “Dream Big,” “Bring Back Love,” and “Happiness is a Choice” filled the ballroom for the entire night.
The event included a silent auction, an art exhibit of 25 black and white portraits of local cancer survivors, cancer awareness education, and an art station where guests could paint their own positive signs. There were also performances from the Mesa State Dance Society along with the bands Showcage and Ralph Dinosaur and the Fabulous Volcanoes. The event attracted students, faculty, and members of the community. Meant for Movement is an on-campus organization based on spreading positive energy throughout the community. The organization began in the winter of 2007 when senior Nicholas Moore saw a man holding a sign on the corner of 12th street and North Avenue that said, “Positive Thoughts.” Moore noticed that the man continued to stand outside through rain and shine.
“It had a huge impact on me and my circle of friends,” said Moore. He and a group of friends decided to hold signs with positive messages on them.
“I believe that we’ve started a movement that’s growing in great ways,” he said.
In only three years, the “Stay Positive” signs that can be seen on campus and throughout Grand Junction have spread outside of Mesa County.  “The movement is spreading. It’s now in India and California,” said senior Tracy Fisher.
Throwing a charity concert that was aimed at helping cancer victims and survivors brought in community members who have a passion about helping those with the disease. Moore said the group decided to give specifically to the Cancer Survivor Partnership because they wanted to give to an organization that gives a positive perspective to cancer victims.
“RHA and ASG donated money and we’ve received support from student life. A lot of thank you’s go out to all the people that helped, both inside and outside the group,” said Moore.
Meant for Movement plans on another Charity Concert with the Cancer Survivorship Program again next year.
Meant for Movement meets Sundays at 6 p.m. in ACB room 315. Each meeting starts with an art segment where members can paint new positive signs, and then moves on to a business oriented section. The club is also not only college exclusive, anyone can join.
“It’s a totally worthwhile cause there’s no strings attached,” said senior club member Holly Corbin.
