Maverick Notes

When senior Steve Shaw scored a goal in the 47th minute of Friday’s game against University of Colorado of Colorado Springs, it not only helped the men’s soccer team win the game, but it put the men in the playoffs for the first time in team history. With an 8-6-2 record, the Mavs final two games of the year will be on the road. The Mavs won’t know their first tournament opponent until Oct. 31. The tournament begins Nov. 3.

The women’s soccer team had a tough weekend on the pitch with two road losses. New Mexico Highlands got by with a 2-0 victory over the Mavs and then a late goal by CSU-Pueblo put the Thunderwolves past the Mavs 1-0. After falling to a 4-9-2 record, the ladies finish the season at Colorado Christian Friday and UCCS on Halloween.

Alexis Skarda continued her winning ways by winning the Mountaineer Open. The cross country team fell to Western State in overall points, however, and lost the open. The RMAC tournament begins Nov. 6 in Las Vegas.

Former Mesa State pitcher Sergio Romo will have a shot at a World Series ring. Romo, who pitched for the Mavs in 2005, is a relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. Romo went 5-3 this regular season with an earned run average of 2.18 and 70 strike outs. He was named the RMAC Pitcher of the year in 2005.
