Klik into fashion: MSC’s new neighbor

Mesa State students can now be in the “Klik.”

The college recently welcomed its newest neighbor, Klik Clothing Company. What was once America’s Mattress, is now “trendy clothing, and a place to give people something that they cannot find anywhere else,” said Susan Lettmen, Klik’s founder and owner.

Klik Clothing began in Fruita a year ago and has now expanded to Grand Junction due to the success of the boutique in Fruita.

“I initially started Klik in Fruita because I lived there and I wanted to bring something to Fruita that they didn’t have and I also wanted to support my community,” Lettmen said.

“I have always been told that I was a good business person and opening a store was something that I dreamed about for nine years. I finally took the leap of faith to do it,” she said. Making her dream a reality was not easy.

“There was a lot of research put into it and finding what Fruita needed and if it would survive and make it there,” she said. Being a small town, there was a question as to the success of Klik in Fruita. After attending numerous Chamber of Commerce meetings, working with business incubators, conducting online research and doing market analyses, Lettmen was able to open Klik’s doors to Fruita in 2009.

After a year of success in Fruita, expanding Klik to Grand Junction just seemed like the next logical step for Klik and that is exactly what Susan did. After seeing an opportunity in the Grand Junction Market she created a business plan, talked to banks.

“Finding a building was the most difficult (part),” Lettmen said.  Securing a location near the college was a lucky strike.

“I was due to sign on a lease on a Wednesday and saw this building was for lease on the Tuesday before, we looked at it the evening and decided on it then,” she said.

This was a smart business move considering the response that Klik has received from Mesa’s Students.

“The reaction to the store has been awesome. A lot of college kids are coming in and loving it!” Lettmen said. Eventually, Lettmen will implement a student discount to those who present a MavCard. But until then, “Students can keep up with what is happening on Facebook, and we do direct emails too. But we’re now so close; they can just walk right over! We’ll always tell you what’s new and what’s happening,” Lettmen said.

As far as trends this season: “The military look is in this season. I have the jackets, and will be receiving boots; they will be here next week. That stuff is really hot this year,” Lettmen said.

Both of Klik’s stores complement each other yet do not offer the same exact products at each location.

“They both carry a lot of the same brands, we just offer different inventory. You’re going to find Miss Me’s here and going to find Miss Me’s there. But you’re not going to find the same Miss Me’s. There are not a lot of differences other than the layout,” Lettmen said. One addition to the Grand Junction Klik will be a consignment shop. This is currently in the works and will be in the same building. This will offer even more shopping to Mesa students and an opportunity to sale and trade their previously worn clothing.

Within the past year, Klik has made an impact on the Grand Valley and as far as Klik’s future, Lettmen says, “You never know where the road leads you but I’m really happy with the way things are going now.”
