Hitting the powdered slopes was not the reason family and friends visited Powderhorn Sept. 26. Many waited in line to ride the main lift at Powderhorn Ski Resort to take in the view of the Aspen trees changing into their golden autumn colors, known as Color Sunday. As many rode the ski lift around, which took about an hour, they could take in the sun and cool breeze, which was why many traveled to the Mesa that particular day.

Sarah Allen, marketing and communications director at Powderhorn said, “We saw a strong increase in the number of people riding the lift and revenues at the Sunset Grille & Bar.”

Powderhorn has offered rides on the ski lift for 12 years. With tickets costing $10 for adults and $5 for children, it is no wonder many people from all over came to ride.

“It was my first time up here and it was so much fun!” Fruita Monument sophomore Sunny Heart said. “I will definitely come up for years to come.”

After the lift ride, participants could sit on the deck and listen to music, which featured Desert Moon Band from Grand Junction. Alpine Trade and Café, the shop at Powderhorn, had sales for the upcoming ski season, along with Loki outerwear doing demonstrations on their transforming jackets. The smells from the Sunset Grille & Bar seemed to attract many as they stood in line for a burger and fries for lunch.

Not only did Powderhorn have features, but other towns along the scenic byway Highway 65 to Cedaredge also offered many discount and promotions as you traveled through the high country.

Vega State park hosted an open house and had children activities, like an educational activity teaching kids why the leaves change colors. On the way up or down to Powderhorn, one could stop at the Mesa community dinner, which provided turkey, stuffing and other fall side dishes.

In Cederedge, the Colorado Gold Distillery was offering a free tour and tasting after browsing the gift shop. As the colors are changing at the normal pace for the season, the colors should be peaking the first week of October.

Along with Powderhorn hosting the ski lift operations for people to ride up and down, they were also promoting the upcoming ski and snowboard season, showing off the resort, along with promotions for season passes for families, individuals and students. Students interested in getting a season pass can show their MavCard at the resort and a current class schedule to obtain a season pass for only $299.
