Golf finishes 11th at Crossover

With a very young and talented core of golfers, Mesa State coach Paul Brown said that there is no reason the team shouldn’t finish in the top three in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

After winning the first tournament of the year and placing fifth in the second, the Mavs placed 11th out of 20 teams in the RMAC/Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Crossover at the Wildhorse Golf Club in Gothenburg, Neb. The Mavericks struggled the first two rounds of the tournament, but pulled it together in the final round. Brandon Bingaman’s final round score of 68 helped the Mavs stay on pace. His last round was also the lowest round of the day, and the second lowest of the tournament.

Bingaman was tied for 17th place with a score of 221 out of 100 golfers. He also was in the top four in the field in Par 3 scoring (-1) and with 36 pars. Jake Jacobs, freshman, was consistent throughout the tournament and finished with a score of 223 and tied for 28th place overall.

“I am more proud of these young men because of the way they came back on the last day after digging themselves a big hole the first two rounds,” Brown said. “It is a learning experience, they are picking up how important each and every shot is. There is no reason they shouldn’t be in the top 3 in the RMAC on a consistent basis.

“I can’t say enough about Jake Jacobs as a freshman, he is a talented passionate golfer and will only get better.”

“We are giving it our all and not giving up. I learned that as a team we have what it takes to win a tournament,” Jake Jacobs said. “With consistency we can compete with the top teams in the league.”

The Mavericks next tournament is Oct. 11-12 at The Heritage at Westmoor Golf Course in Westminster for the Colorado School of Mines Invitational.
