Riding with Small: Profile of a Safe Rides rider

Kevin Strong-Holte
News Reporter

Freshman Cayce Small volunteers most weekends with Safe Rides, a designated driving service on campus that is free to students.
Kevin with the Crite: How did you get started with Safe Rides?
Cayce Small: One of my friends in my hall is a desk attendant. She volunteers with Safe Rides most of the time, and usually [our new members] just know somebody who’s already going and they go with them.
Crite: So what do you do for Safe Rides?
Small: I’m a rider. There’s got to be guy and girl in each car. Usually the guys are the drivers and the girls just ride along.
Crite: What is a typical night like?
Small: Well, it depends. A couple nights we’ve been out from 9 p.m. and we’ve come back around 3:30 a.m. Other nights were only out for 20 minutes. A couple weeks ago we had a very entertaining conversation with a few guys from my building. There were four of them in the back seat, one was lying across their laps. They had a 20 minute discussion about whether a McDouble has cheese on it or not.
Crite: Do you think Safe Rides encourages students to drink?
Small: No. I think it’s a positive organization. Students are going to drink no matter what and if we’re not here to give them rides home, then what’s going to happen to them? They’re going to get into a car accident, or get picked up by the cops.
Crite: Where is the weirdest place you have picked someone up?
Small: The strip club, Fantasy. Yeah, that was awkward.
Crite: What can students do to support Safe Rides?
Small: You should come out with us! Tell your friends. I think more advertising would help, too. We are here for you guys, you should know about us.
Safe Rides runs every Friday and Saturday night from 8 p.m.- 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. For more information or a safe ride home, call them at 970.257.9797.
