The Trainwreck derailed

web 4For over three years his voice has polluted the radio airwaves of the Grand Valley and as the fall semester rolls along, it’s the last installment of the “Train Wreck” on 91.3 KMSA, Mesa State’s college radio station.
“We are what we are, a train wreck,” Scott Schlaufman, the main host of the Train Wreck said. Schlaufman and co-host Ryan Blake, who often serves as the show’s voice of reason, offer a humorous outtake on world issues.
“We aren’t the most knowledgeable people, but we just try and have fun,” Schlauffman said. From 10 p.m. – 1 a.m. on Wednesdays the Train Wreck chugs along, and with special segments like Scott vs. Food. He takes on different types of food challenges on-air for the delight and disgust of his listeners.
A favorite was when “Scotty Danger” took on the world’s hottest pepper – the ghost pepper. Schlaufman had the pepper made into a salsa by a friend in the culinary program, and he put the salsa on a cracker and put the cracker, salsa down on his tongue.
“If I remember I froze up and got this glazed over look in my face and tried to chug some milk,” said Schlaufman. “I think I sort of blacked out for a minute.”
Another favorite segment is the shows Train Wreck of the Week where “Scotty Danger” (as Schlaufman’s regulars call him) chooses a celebrity or public figure that has failed in both hosts’ eyes. For example – ex – Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, because in Schlaufman’s words, “he’s a crybaby. The way he handled the situation with the coaching change was immature. He’s Chicago’s problem now.” Cutler was the first to be inducted to the Train Wreck’s Hall of Wreckage.
A college student would be hard pressed not to find the show entertaining.
More talk, less music and a show that is never planned, Danger and Blake sit in front of the microphones in-studio leaving the listener asking themselves what is bound to flow through their unrehearsed mouths next.
“We’re constantly evolving and in the last year we’ve hit our stride and have really found our voices,” Danger says. This semester Danger and Blake plan on continuing their evolution, with a brand new Scott versus series, where Danger hopes to take on pepper spray, and what may be the “Super Bowl” of all challenges the tattoo gun in Scott vs. Needle where Danger plans on being tattooed on air.
“We try to be innovative, new and interesting, so if getting inked on–air is the next step in innovation so be it.” The Train Wreck will continue to flood the airwaves for the remainder of the semester and Danger and Blake will continue to shock and awe their listeners into submission.
