With finals just around the corner stress levels are starting to rise. To help students prepare for the coming week many Mesa State organizations are offering several events to help students.
The 19th annual Cram Jam will be held in the MavPav. The event will be held the first Monday of finals week from 10 – 11 p.m. This will give students the opportunity to relax and forget about the stress of finals. There is a new theme each semester and this time around it will be a tribute to the 80’s. There will be several items given out as prizes like a bike, t-shirts and water bottles. The event is only open to students who have a meal plan.
“This is fun, relaxing and gets students away from the frustration of studying,” said Craig Shearwood, Sodexo marketing coordinator.
The TLC (tutorial learning center), which is located on the first floor of Houston Hall, is available for tutoring in any subject. The TLC will be open the week before finals during normal hours for tutoring, Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. This is a great opportunity to go in and ask any questions you might have with homework or studying. Robyn Rose, who is the coordinator for the TLC, said the center will be open during finals week. There will, however, not be any tutoring available, but the lab will be open during regular hours if students are looking for a quiet place to study.
“The biggest key when it comes to studying for finals is to start early,” said Trey Atkins, a senior psychology major who is also a tutor at the TLC. Atkins said that every student has their own way of studying so the best thing to do is the same thing you normally do, just start sooner. The TLC tries to help students figure out what is best for them.
“Instead of coming into the TLC and saying you need help with everything, be specific on what you don’t understand. It makes it easier for us to help.” Atkins said.
If you are looking for a place to study in silence, the library offers students the opportunity to reserve a study room during finals week. Sign up starts for the rooms on May 3 for MSC students only. There is a minimum of two people per group, first come first serve, and there is also a maximum of three hours of time.
“The best way to study is without any noise distracting you, I think this is a great idea, it gives students a chance to reserve somewhere quiet for a decent amount of time,” said Carley Nelson, a junior marketing and management major. “Some people can study with music or noise in the background, but for me it needs to be silent.”
