“Bacchus” god of partying rocks the air

He has been on the air for more than 10 years and he is the definition of what KMSA 91.3 represents. He is known as “Bacchus,” but on the street he is known as Brian Ramsey.
Bacchus hosts a primarily metal show on Fridays between 1 – 4p.m. but rap and alternative music will occasionally make an appearance.
“I love music and I try to find something good in every kind of music,” he said.
He moved to Grand Junction with his mother from Wisconsin, and before coming back to school, he built custom doors which is something he still does to this day.
But without the influence of KMSA, he admits, he probably would have never returned to school. He said that he came into the studio one time with one of his friends and it was the thought of being a DJ that sparked his interest in school again. Now he is preparing to graduate in August with a bachelor’s in mass communication with a broadcasting concentration.
The music that he plays on his show can be summed up with bands like Slayer and Metallica, but he says that 85 percent of his music is requested.
“I really like talking,” he said. “(My listeners) and I have become really good friends even though I haven’t seen their faces.”
In addition to being a DJ, Bacchus is also the KMSA operations manager, and over the years he has helped develop different formats like “Metal Saturday” and “Hip-hop Thursday.” He would like to see KMSA become more involved with charity events around the Grand Valley. Right now the station is currently organizing a concert to help send veterans to the war memorials in Washington D.C.
After 10 years experience, he would recommend becoming a DJ to anyone with the passion and drive to do so.
“KMSA is an excellent opportunity to experience the fun part of being a DJ,” he said.
When it comes down to it, he is happy to be graduating but he doesn’t know what’s next on the horizon. Until then he can be found rocking out in the KMSA studio.
“(KMSA) is Grand Junction,” he said. “It’s the hometown love.”
