Democratic Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff visited the Mesa State College campus Friday, April 16 to discuss with students the future of higher education.

“We were hoping for a larger audience, but today was an okay turn out of students willing to listen,” said Nick Lopez, ASG vice president. “We understand students have class and can’t make it.”

Romanoff discussed his goals and why he would be the best Democratic candidate for Senate.

“I think it’s important to have some experience living the regular life of Colorado,” Romanoff said.

He has political experience and was the speaker of the house from 2005-2009.

“I have been across Colorado doing grounding work in different counties,” he said.

He said he is the only candidate that is turning down contributions from special interests groups; individuals are the only ones who fund him. This makes him stand out from the others, which he hopes will help him win in the end. He is also the only candidate that running in Colorado who has lead a legislature.

“Romanoff is really solid in understanding how to relate to blue collar people,” said Elysia Pruett a junior writing composition major. “The most important thing I think a Democrat can talk about is Wall Street reform, how easily they can connect with blue collar Americans, and whether or not they supported the health care reform passing and what they would of done to improve it.”

Romanoff said he is most proud of the bill he introduced to rebuild rural schools in Colorado. The bill also known as BEST stands for Building Excellent Schools Today.

“If Romanoff beats (Bob) Bennett I hope to see him get really passionate about a variety of issues and not just sticking to democratic talking points,” said Pruett.
