While most people know of the campus radio station, 91.3 KMSA, they may however not know about the disc jockeys and the reason they bring Mavericks and online listeners the music they love. One of these DJs is Cody Parkes. He is currently the voice behind the microphone on the sports talk show on Fridays from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. He also has an Electronic Dance Movement show on Wednesday, however it is currently on hold because it is crunch time and Parkes has no time to do the show.

Parkes started out as a DJ on KMSA in 2001 as a freshman and after taking some time off, rejoined the team a year ago with his sports talk show. He has also been a DJ for electronic music for the past 10 years, which he thinks gives him an edge and sets him apart from other DJs.

“I bring a lot of knowledge a lot of people don’t have because I’ve been doing it for 10 years,” Parkes said. “I’m the only one with an electronic show.”

For the most part, Parkes’ show discusses three main sports, baseball, basketball and football. But he’ll talk about any sport, one of which being NASCAR, though he notes it’s not the best coverage of the sport.

“I cover NASCAR just because I feel bad,” Parkes said. “I end up making fun of it more than anything.”

He’ll also give his input as to which websites have the best gambling odds and will give his input as to who has the best odds in different Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) matches and other sporting events. He likes to bring in different aspects to his show that may not be heard on other sports talk shows and believes that’s why his show is such a success.

“I think people listen because they like how ‘matter of fact’ I am about it,” Parkes said. “I don’t sugar coat anything and I don’t play the typical radio sports show.”

While Parkes enjoys every aspect of media, from print to broadcast, he noted that radio is his favorite. People have always told him that he has a good voice for radio. Parkes also enjoys being on camera, so doing U-Stream, which is the live camera set up in the KMSA office that streams live online, as well gives him a chance to be on camera and have people watch him as he does his show.

Next year Parkes will be taking over for Kyle Cooper as the production manager, as well as continue his sports talk show. He also hopes to get his Electronic Dance Movement show going again, time depending.

On the side, Parkes greatly enjoys photography with his wife and has been playing golf for 15 years. He also does kickboxing and jeu jitsu on the side, or he tries, he says. According to Parkes, most of the time he just stands there while the other guys practice on him.
