The Mesa State women’s golf team picked up a victory at The Quality Inn Invitation at the Redlands Mesa Golf Course April 5 and 6, posting a team score of 670, nearly 133 strokes ahead of second place finisher Adams State.
Jennifer Hilts notched first place for the Mavericks, with a score of 159, including an invitational-low of 79 during the second round. She was neck and neck with teammate Michelle Stripp after the first round, but a strong performance by Hilts in the second round put her atop the leader board by seven strokes.
“(Hilts,) Kristina Casillas, and Jessica Berve are probably our key golfers,” sophomore Afton Balling said. “They’re consistent. The team builds on consistency. Not everyone is going to play well, so it nice to be able to count on someone else’s score.”
Berve made a late run in the second round, dropping four strokes from her first round score to climb from seventh to fourth.
Casillas and Hilts lead the way for the Mavericks in terms of consistency. Casillas sank 15 pars, and Hilts had four birdies.
“Our team’s expectations are to make it the super regional in Minnesota,” Balling said.
The Mavericks are now ranked second in the Central Region behind Minnesota State– Mankato. The Mavericks have dominated their RMAC competition. Mesa State has five of the top ten RMAC golfers in average score. Casillas and Hilts are tied for first, and average a 79.2. Berve holds down the fourth spot with 80.8. Balling is in a three-way tie for seventh with 82.2, and Stripp is in tenth with 82.3.
The Mavericks take a week off before traveling to Goodyear, Arizona for the RMAC championship Monday.
Baseball
The baseball team had no trouble scoring this weekend as the Mavs picked up four wins against Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
Over the series the Mavs scored in double digits in three of the games, outscoring Mines 57-22 in the series.
This weekend the team will finish an eight game road trip when they play four at Metro State in Denver.
Softball
