Relationship solutions the focus of main “Attraction” this week

By Greg Morgan

It’s not an easy task finding new and interesting ways to entertain a college audience, but Mesa State’s Program Activities Council (PAC) steps up to the challenge year after year. To meet this challenge, PAC attended the National Association of College Activities (NACA).

Junior Beth Lillie, a criminal justice major, represented Mesa at NACA.

“NACA are bands or comedians or anything for us to try and book through the college circuit,” Lillie said.

She said that artists like Owl City got their start from NACA.

While attending NACA in Portland, Ore. this year, some Mesa State PAC students heard a lecture by David Coleman. While at first glance the name appears meaningless, most people may be more familiar with Coleman’s work than they realize. Coleman, known as the “Date Doctor,” is the man who inspired the movie, “Hitch.” Coleman started an entire empire of speakers dealing with everything from finance to getting straight A’s.

Lillie was one of the Mesa State PAC students who listened to the Date Doctor speak. After hearing him speak she was instantly inspired to have someone like him come to Mesa.

“It’s new stuff that Mesa hasn’t seen before,” she said.

PAC wasn’t able to book the Date Doctor, however, but they were able to get one of his associates, Mr. Attraction. His real name is Ryan Clauson. Clauson travels the world talking at different schools about health, academics, and of course the art of attraction. He‘s coming to Mesa State specifically to talk about attraction and dating.

“It’s about people finding love, and getting in relationships and making sure the relationship is good,” Lillie said. “Not everyone is good at meeting people or talking to the opposite sex and this guy can help a person out.”

Lillie also said one of the subjects Mr. Attraction deals with is as simple as where to put your arms in a hug.

“Girls on top and guys on bottom, and when it’s two guys you criss-cross,” Lillie said.

PAC is working hard this semester to entertain students.

“This is one of the bigger events we’ve tried and we’re just really excited to see how it all plays out,” Lillie said.

PAC has even extended an invite to five local high schools including Fruita Monument, Central, Grand Junction, R5, and Palisade.

“We delivered posters to all five schools,” Lillie said.

PAC has high hopes for this event. Lillie is especially hopeful since this is one of the biggest events she’s ever been in charge of planning.

“I’m excited to see how many people are interested in this guy,” she said.

This event is free and will take place on Friday, April 16 from 7:30-8:45 p.m. in Brownson Arena.

For more information on this event as well as other activities planned by PAC, you can add PAC on Facebook or visit their office in Elm Hall. Lillie works at the information desk as well as PAC and is happy to answer any questions.
