Two years ago ASG started Remembrance Day to honor Mesa State students who have died at a young age. In memory of these students a snow crabapple tree was planted in front of Grand Mesa Residence Hall.

This past Saturday, March 27, a dedication was made to nine former students to remember what a great impact they have had on family and friends.

Ryan Hendershot, ASG president, identified the students who were being remembered, and gave family members and friends a chance to share memories of their loved ones.

The students were, Jake Brock, Jennifer Kois, Heather Jay, Samantha Loy, Tina Sterling-Soffel, Enrique Gutierrez, Jonny Maxfield, Brittany Robinson, and Jeana Vargas.

“Having known Jacob Brock and Jonny Maxfield, I think that this is a great way to acknowledge what wonderful people they were, what an impact they made on people’s lives, and how they will always be remembered and missed,” said Sean Matheson, third year kinesiology major and cornerback for the Mesa State football team.

Balloons were released at the end of the ceremony in each honored students’ favorite color in their memory.
