After a disappointing outing in California, the women’s soccer team was still looking for their first win as they traveled to St. George, Utah for two games against non-conference opponents. Following a 1-0 loss against Sonoma State University, the Mavs were able to pull of a win on Saturday against Humboldt State University by a final of 2-0.

Following the games in California, head Coach Jason Clare wished that the outcome had been different for his team.

“First game against East Bay I was pleased but also disappointed,” Clare said. “I felt like it was a game that we should have won. We created enough chances that we should have put it to bed.”

One key for the Mavs as they headed into this weekend series was keeping their composure from start to finish, following their game against Stanislaus State in which the Mavs finished with seven yellow cards.

“We just have to be disciplined in the way that we defend,” Clare said. “and know our individual roles and collectively as a team.”

However, despite going 0-1- 1 in their first two games, the

team still has high goals for the coming season.

“We just have to keep our composure and sty focused on what our goal is,” captain Taylor Bruno said. “We have very big expectations this year and we can’t let one game get us down.”

CMU’s first matchup of the weekend came against Sonoma State. The two teams were evenly matched the whole game, but the one breakthrough for both teams came in the 19th minute in favor of the Seawolves. Thanks to a center pass from the right wing, forward Sara Van Wagoner was able to get it behind the CMU defense and put it in the back of the net for

the only score on the day. The Mavs finished with nine shots, three of which were on target. Goal keeper Janelle Richmond- Buccola finished with five saves on the day for the Mavs.

The second game of the weekend was dominated by the Mavs over the Lumberjacks. Despite not scoring in the first half, CMU was able to get the first point of the game in the 45th minute at the foot of midfielder Amanda Wenzel. Wenzel was able to put it top shelf for her first goal of the year. The assist came courtesy of defender Madi Chaffee.

The second goal of the match came in the 87 minute

and was the nail in the coffin the Mavs needed. Midfielder Alexis Allard was able to take a header from Jocelyn Ceccarelli and put it in the back of the net for her first goal of the season and a 2-0 lead for CMU. That would turn out to be the final score of the contest.

The Mavs outshot Lumberjacks 16-5 and 7-2 in shots on goal for the game. CMU’s next contest is Wednesday against Angelo State University down in Gunnison, Colo. The Mavs first home game is Sunday against Westminster College for the first conference game of the year which is set for

a 1 p.m. kick off.
