The Mavericks swept their third series of the season and remain undefeated as they beat the Grizzlies on Sunday.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) edged out Adams State University once again as they got two more mercy-rule wins.

Freshman catcher Ally Distler really helped her team out defensively as she caught three Grizzlies stealing in the first three innings of game one.

ASU scored the first run of this game in the second, as Kylea Wall singled to center field and on the throwing error by redshirt senior outfielder Brooke Doumer, Belinda Vargas scored. CMU responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Redshirt sophomore third baseman Nicole Christensen continued to have a dominant series and singled through the left side that allowed Distler to start off the rally for the maroon and white.

The next pair of Maverick runs came on a bunt from redshirt freshman outfielder Drew Sims. Sims bunted on a 1-0 count and with the Grizzlies defense having a major throwing error redshirt sophomore shortstop Ashley Bradford and redshirt freshman Sarah Jorissen scored.

Sims scored on an error right before Doumer hit her second home run of the season quickly making it a 1-5 Mavericks game. The Mavericks scored six more runs in the fourth to make it a 13-1 game. ASU scored another run in the top of the fifth but it wasn’t enough as they got mercy-ruled in five.

Sims,Distler and redshirt sophomore pitcher Ellie Smith all ended the morning game with two hits a piece.

Smith got handed the ball to start the day off for the Mavericks and continued her dominance in the circle. Coming into the game Smith had an ERA of .89.

Smith had the five inning complete game as she only allowed two runs and eight hits from the Grizzlies offense. She moves to  still be undefeated in all of her decisions this season as she is now at 4-0.

The Maverick lineup got on the board early on a Distler single to score Doumer.

Both teams put up zeros in innings two and three. The Mavericks found a trend in their games this weekend that they hit three or more runs in the fourth inning this weekend. This continued into the second game today as that fourth inning really opened the door in this game.

Redshirt sophomore outfielder Lauren Wedman started the scoring with a bases clearing double. Doumer, Sims and Bradford touched home to make it a 4-0 game.

Wedman went 1-2 in game two after going 0-3 in game one ending her 20 game hitting streak that started before the season shut down last year.

Christensen and redshirt sophomore catcher Kaley Barker hit back to back home runs as Christensen’s home run was a two run shot onto the party deck in center field.

Distler was able to hit a SAC fly in the bottom half of the fifth to get the walk-off mercy rule for the Mavericks. The Mavericks won the second game 8-0.

Redshirt junior pitcher Paige Adair was completely dominant against the Grizzlies as she threw another complete game. She held ASU to two hits and two walks as she was able to strikeout five over 80 pitches.

The Mavericks will continue their season on the road as they travel to Denver, Colo. to take on the Rangers of Regis University. The series will begin on March 27 at noon.
