The expansion of campus and the updating of buildings was a chief principle of President Foster’s tenure, and that construction looks to continue into the future.
Here are a few updates on the current projects Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is pursuing.
St Mary’s
Announced during the Spring 2021 semester, the St. Mary’s SCL Health Medical Education Center is one of the biggest current projects CMU is overseeing.
The project, which is estimated to cost around $13 million, is funded almost entirely through donations. It will be open for classes starting January 2022, during the J-term.

“We are replacing the ‘temporary’ tent with a hard building [steel and masonry],” Director of Facilities Services David Detwiler. “It will add one additional multipurpose court as well as classroom, lab and office space for Kinesiology.”
The total cost of the project is estimated to be $23.3 million, with a completion date of Spring 2023.
Bergman Field
While the field next to the Maverick Center has been largely completed for a while now, additional construction is underway for a grandstand seating section. It’ll seat around 1,100 people.
“The goal is that we can use this as a home game location for certain games during the season, and as a venue for Super Regionals which can conflict with JUCO at Suplizio,” Vice President of Intergovernmental and Community Affairs Derek Wagner said. “We are also replacing the clubhouse/locker rooms for the team.”
The field, with a completion date of March 2022, will also feature a press box, concessions restrooms and ticketing.
Other projects
The Maverick bookstore was remodeled over the summer, along with the serving area in the Caf. As well, the Maverick Fitness Center added a second-level mezzanine, and better seating was added to the softball field, with better lights as well.
“President Marshall spoke extensively during the presidential search process about the need to continue growing and thriving in order to meet the diverse needs of our students, faculty and the community at large,” Wagner said.
CMU is also eyeing a replacement of Robinson Theater in the future.
“In addition to a number of exciting capital construction projects currently pending with the State of Colorado (for funding), the President is also looking forward to exploring strategic relationships and public/private partnerships that meet campus needs and enrich our community,” Wagner said.
