Scholarships are a saving grace for most college students.

For incoming freshmen, merit scholarships are the most commonly awarded. Colorado Mesa University (CMU) offers a few, including the Academic Achievement, President’s and Distinguished Scholarships. Each has certain criteria that incoming students have to meet based on their high school transcripts.

Merit scholarships cannot be earned as you go on into your college career; if you do not qualify before coming into college there is no way to appeal that. That’s why other scholarships are important to keep an eye on and apply for.

Scholarship applications for CMU open on Oct. 1 and close on Dec. 31. These applications can be found by going to MavZone’s Applications tab and finding the Scholarship Application pop-up. Going for as many awards as possible is the best route to take.

There are also merit scholarships for transfer students. The Two Rivers and Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships can be found on the website where all of their stipulations are listed.

Other awards include the First Generation and Legacy Scholarships, which are awarded to first generation students and students who have had a parent graduate from CMU. They both require you to have a 3.0 to receive. If you come into college with less than a 3.0, you can appeal your scholarship after one semester of improved grades.

Other scholarships can be found on the website by simply searching for the key word “scholarship.” It will pull up 100 search results that students can scroll through and apply for based on what they qualify for.

An important part of keeping scholarships through all four years is going to class and turning in homework. Awards can be lost very quickly when a student drops below the threshold in grades.

Many students have lost money in their college career. The best thing to know about yourself as a student is how to balance school life and a social life. It is possible to have a great time at college while passing your classes.

Another solution is to search scholarships on your favorite browser and apply to as many as you can. The worst thing that can happen is you do not get some, but it is always worth the try.
