Colorado Mesa University (CMU) came out on top in a battle with Metro State University-Denver (MSUD).

The Mavericks and Roadrunners took this one to the fourth set, as the two nationally ranked teams battled it out to see who would remain undefeated. The Mavericks would win this one in four sets as they beat the roadrunners 3-1.

The Mavericks really shined in the front row tonight as freshman outside hitter Sierra Hunt and sophomore middle blocker Savannah Spitzer really stepped up in front of the home crowd.

Hunt started tonight for CMU and made her presence known right out of the gate. Hunt throughout the night was able to find the gaps on the floor to find herself with 11 kills.

Spitzer also got things done on the offensive side of the game for the Mavericks with 13 kills of her own.

The Mavericks knew if they wanted to beat the Roadrunners they would have to compete on both sides of the ball and make the other team work twice as hard to get a point. The Mavericks defense was giving it everything they had to make sure MSUD did not get a point.

“As a team we played defense, they could not get a clean kill easily. We were getting touches on the blocks, balls up, we were running them down. Maddi was running through walls, Maranda diving into bleachers. We were not going to let them get a clean kill that is for sure,” Spitzer said.

The outside and right side hitters really dominated for both teams as the Roadrunners consistently were right there with the Mavericks through four sets. Kayla White who stayed in the game consistently for MSUD had 10 kills to help out her team.

CMU and MSUD fought through the game and found times where they would go back and forth sharing errors as well. The two teams combined for 13 errors in the second set alone, a trend that the Mavericks fought back from and won the set 26-28.

Senior outside hitter Maddi Foutz dominated once again. She led the team in kills with 14 and 20 digs on the night as well.

Sophomore middle blocker Haley Hahn made her impact on this team as well tonight. Hahn had three blocks as well as four kills.

The team continued to bring the energy from the bench that they have brought all season but they also felt the energy from the fans.

“Coming in as a freshman this is really the first time we have been able to have a lot of fans so it was really new and really exciting. It was just great to feed off of everyone’s energy,” Hunt said.

The Mavericks will continue their season as they play CSU-Pueblo in a rescheduled match on March 13 at 11 a.m in Grand Junction, Colo.
