The Mavericks picked up their seventh conference win

The Mavericks improved to 7-1 against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents with their 17-10 win over the Skyhawks.  

Redshirt sophomore attacker Melanie Evans scored a career-high eight points in the game. She scored four goals on seven shots and recorded four assists.  

Redshirt sophomore midfielder Taylor Jakeman scored the second-most points in the game with five. She scored four goals and registered one assist for Colorado Mesa University (CMU).

Freshman midfielder Ali Bryant got the Mavericks on the board first in the game with 13:55 left in the first quarter. Fort Lewis College (FLC) came back with two goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead with 11:32 remaining in the first quarter. 

Evans tied the game up at two with 7:43 left in the quarter, and her goal got the Maverick’s offense rolling. CMU scored five more goals in the first quarter to take a 7-2 lead.  

Haley Dostie scored the lone goal for the Skyhawks in the second quarter to bring FLC within four goals. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kiley Davis answered with a goal of her own off an assist from Evans with 11:36 left in the first half to keep the Mavericks up by five goals.  

There was a 10-minute scoring drought for both teams, but redshirt sophomore midfielder Ashton Whittle scored a goal while the Mavericks were man-down. Whittle scored off an assist from Jakeman and gave CMU a 9-3 lead going into the halftime break. 

The third quarter opened with both teams trading goals back-and-forth, but the Mavericks held an 11-5 lead with 10:49 remaining in the quarter. Bryant, Jakeman and Evans all came back with a goal each to put the Mavericks up by nine goals.

FLC closed out the third quarter on a three-to-one run to bring the score to 8-15 going into the final quarter.  

Dostie opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a goal from inside the circle to bring the Skyhawks within six goals. Jakeman came back with her fourth and final goal of the game with 3:54 remaining in the game. Both teams scored one more goal in the game as the Mavericks went on to win by seven goals.  

CMU narrowly finished with more draw controls than FLC as the Mavericks won 16 of the 30 draw controls in the game. The ground ball battle was played to a tie as both teams picked up 20 ground balls.  

Freshman attacker Caroline Ohngemach and Bryant both finished with three points in the Maverick’s win. Ohngemach finished with two goals with a goal coming off a free-position shot and she dished out one assist in the game. Bryant scored three goals and controlled 12 draws in the game.  

CMU’s next game is Wednesday, April 20 at 5:00 p.m. against Westminster College at Community Hospital Unity Field.
