The Mavericks lose in heartbreaking fashion

The Mavericks fall 84-85 to the Roadrunners as Tyrei Randall made a three-quarter court shot as the buzzer sounded in overtime.

The Mavericks fell 85-84 as Tyrei Randall made a 75-foot buzzer-beater to win the game in overtime for the Roadrunners.  

Redshirt senior guard Georgie Dancer was sent to the free-throw line with just over one second left in the game. He made his first shot but missed his second attempt from the line which allowed Randall to get the rebound, free himself up and fire the shot.  

Randall hit two three-pointers in the final 10 seconds of the game including the game-winner. He hit a three-pointer with less than five seconds left to bring Metro State University-Denver (MSUD) within one point and followed it up with the game-winner.

Redshirt freshman forward Trevor Baskin recorded a double-double in the game as he scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. He shot seven of 16 from the field and went eight of nine from the free-throw line. Baskin made his impact felt on the defensive end as he blocked four shots and finished with two steals in the game.  

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) had five different players finish with double-digit points. Redshirt freshman guard Reece Johnson was the Maverick’s second-leading scorer with 19 points. He shot five of nine from beyond the arc in the game and he dished out four assists in the game.  

The Mavericks held a 40-38 lead after the first half, but the Roadrunners tied the game up on their first possession of the second half. Johnson came back and hit two consecutive three-pointers to take a six-point lead for CMU.  

The Roadrunners were able to cut the lead back down to three points as Laolu Oke three consecutive baskets. Randall tied the game up at 49 as he drilled a three-pointer with 14:17 left in regulation.  

Keyshaad Dixon then gave MSUD a two-point lead as he converted a layup on the fastbreak, but Johnson tied the game back up at 51 less than a minute later. Both teams went back-and-forth grappling for the lead until Ra’Shawn Langston hit a shot from beyond the three-point arc to give the Roadrunners a four-point lead.  

Redshirt freshman guard Mac Riniker cut the lead back down to two points as he got to the free-throw line and made both attempts with 6:46 left in regulation. MSUD quickly scored four unanswered points to lift their lead back to six points.  

Redshirt freshman guard Blaise Threatt changed the momentum of the game as he carved into the paint to finish through contact and draw the foul. Threatt converted the and one play at the free-throw line and brought CMU within three points. Dixon got to the line for the Roadrunners and went one of two to take a four-point lead with 4:05 left in the second half.  

Johnson immediately answered with a three-pointer, and Baskin got to the line on the next possession to give the Mavericks a one-point lead.  

Baskin then hit a massive three-pointer with 1:22 left in regulation to put the Mavericks up by two points. Baskin was sent to the free-throw line with 38 seconds left in the second half and he went one of two to give the Mavericks a three-point lead.  

The Roadrunners had time to set up a play and Langston converted as he hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 70 with 16 seconds left in regulation. Threatt got a pick outside the three-point arc, drove into the paint and got the shot up. He couldn’t get it to fall through traffic which sent this game to overtime.

The Roadrunners took a two-point lead in overtime, but Trevor Baskin answered with six-straight points of his own. He converted an and-one play and he hit a three-pointer to put CMU up 76-72 with 1:50 left in overtime.  

Both teams went back-and-forth before Randall cut the lead down to one point as he buried a three-pointer with 1:05 left in overtime. Dancer hit a three-pointer of his own with 35 seconds left in overtime, but Langston answered with a jumper to cut the lead back down to two points.  

Threatt lifted CMU’s lead back up to four points at the free-throw line, but Randall’s hot hand cut it back down to one point with a fastbreak three-pointer. Dancer was sent to the line, and he went one of two which gave the Mavericks an 84-82 lead. Randall gathered the rebound off Dancer’s miss and he heaved a three-quarter court shot to win the game as the buzzer sounded.  

Threatt scored 16 points in the game, and he shot five of ten from the field. He pulled down six rebounds against the Roadrunners as well.  

The Mavericks scored 22 points in the paint and 22 points off turnovers against the Roadrunners.  

CMU’s next game is Saturday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. against Colorado Christian University in Brownson Arena.
