The Mavericks started the second half of their season with a large loss to Metro State University-Denver (MSUD).

For their first game in 2022 due to games being postponed, the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Women’s Basketball team faced a very physical Roadrunners team that came up with the 62-76 win.

The team came out not looking as crisp as they have and was not able to make the adjustments that were needed to stay in the game.

“We have to change it, if we come out not playing well we have to make a change quicker and I don’t know if we even made a change. We made a few little runs in the beginning of the third and fourth quarters but I think we need to make bigger adjustments soon,” Graduate student forward Kelsey Siemons said.

Siemons continued to do well defensively as she had two solo blocks and one defensive rebound. Offensively, she had six points for CMU.

Graduate student guard Daniella Turner led the Mavericks in points as she finished the night with 12.

MSUD took control of the game early as they won every quarter besides the fourth when CMU tried to close the gap.

In the second half of the game. Freshman Lauryn Deede was the tough and physical shooter  that the Mavericks needed at the moment. She was able to make all three of her shots from inside the paint and the positive energy she brings to the Mavericks team is reflected on and off the court by her teammates.

“I think that she is doing a great job. She is strong, she comes in and plays good minutes, she plays hard. I think she does an amazing job. She gives us energy half the time, she is the only one cheering on in practice, she gives everyone spark, she is always positive and has a smile on her face, ” Siemons said.

The Roadrunners were able to take advantage of the Mavericks off night and found themselves with a lead of 22 in the middle of the third quarter. They also capitalized on the turnovers that were made throughout the night as seven of their shots came off of turnovers.

The Mavericks move to 10-2 on the season and 5-2 in conference play as they will face another familiar opponent in Colorado Christian University on Jan.15 at 5:30 p.m. in Grand Junction, Colo.
