The Mavericks end their season with a loss to the Orediggers.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) travelled to Golden, Colo to face Colorado School of Mines (CSM) in a quarterfinal matchup of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament.

Going into this game, the Mavericks had the mindset of knowing that they had to leave it all on the pitch if they wanted to win and advance. Senior goalkeeper Emily Signorio discussed how they knew that this is what they were working towards all season.

“We went into the game with a mindset that we had to give everything we had in this game. We knew we had to leave everything on the pitch. Our hard work all season had led us here and we wanted to take this opportunity to show what we had worked for,” Signorio said.

CSM came into the game with an aggressive approach. The approach paid off early as they got on the board at 03:40, Eilot Edwards scored to make it 1-0.

Defense played a big factor in the game as CSM played a defensive game after their early lead.

“Defense is always a huge part of any team’s success. Mines once they got their goal, all they did was try and sit back and just keep everything in front of them,” freshman forward Lila Dere said.

Giving it their all was a common theme throughout the quarterfinal matchup for CMU. Going into the last 45 minutes of the game that is exactly what they wanted to do.

“The mindset coming out of halftime is that we just need one goal- one shot to go in and we had them. We wanted to give everything we had for the last 45 minutes,” Dere said.

Even though the Mavericks had nine shots during the game and five on the goal none of them went in and CMU went down scoreless. Dere took six shots for CMU and three of them were on the goal. Redshirt freshman forward Haley Klasner, junior midfielder Lexi Newton and freshman forward Addie Randel all took one shot a piece as well.

Signorio had four saves at the net to keep her team in this one until the very last second. After the game she reflected on what CMU soccer has meant to her over the past four years.

“CMU soccer has been a major reason for the person I am today. We have gone through so much as a team and through those challenges I have learned so many lessons I would have not learned if I was not a part of this program. It has meant the world to me that I have been able to play the sport I love at the collegiate level with such amazing teammates. I will never forget my time here and I will never forget what it means to be a teammate as well as a leader. I am so incredibly sad that it is over, but I’m so happy I was able to play with these girls,” Signorio said.

The Mavericks finish their season with a record of 5-4-1 in the 2020 season.

CMU women’s soccer will start their Fall 2021 season on Sept.3 against Texas Permian Basin in Grand Junction,Colo.
