The women’s soccer team dominated the pitch on Sunday against the Black Hills State University (BHSU) in their first conference match.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) showed no mercy as sophomore Mira Houck scored a goal two minutes into the game, setting the pace of the game.

The starting lineup this year has been amazing at burying those shots early in the game and establishing dominance on the field. One thing that was notable from this game was strong communication and avid possession of the ball.

“Honestly, I think the first goal we scored where we had the midfielders step in-pick somebody’s pockets, and hit a laser. I think that it is great that we can score from midfield,” Head Coach Megan Remec said.

In the 28 minute of the game, CMU scored their second goal. The goal went down as a CMU Team goal in the score book.Redshirt freshman Addie Randall buried the second goal of the game by applying heavy pressure at the goal. Randel managed to bury the shot, tackling the line of defense.

As the Mavericks put the pressure on BHSU throughout the game, they also controlled the ball for a majority of the game. The Mavericks had 25 shots throughout the whole game with eight of those being on the goal.

The Mavericks also capitalized on the amount of fouls the Yellowjackets had throughout the game with having 15.

Remac discussed how she has seen growth within her team this season. She knows that even though CMU has put on a strong showing with their 4-1 record there are always things that can be worked on.

“You know, there is some growth. I think there are some other opportunities to get better in the game so we will keep focusing on this[…]It is good for our backline as we got a shut-out and did not concede a goal. That is a big piece for our backline and our goalkeeper,” Remec said. “We probably would have been happier if we had been a little bit sharper in front of goal for a few more opportunities today but I think overall it is good to get the win in our half and keep getting better from here.”

Sunday was a special day on the soccer field as youth soccer leagues came to support the team. Randel talked about how it is always fun to do what you love but also surrounding people who are like-minded.

The Mavericks will head back out on the road this week as they head to Pueblo, Colo. to take on the Thunderwolves of Colorado State University-Pueblo on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. They will then head down the road to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Oct.3 at noon.
