Home runs continued to fly as the Mavericks hit 10 leading them to sweep Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU).

Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) junior catcher Spencer Bramwell led the team with four home runs including his three on Friday. Junior outfielder Matt Cassin hit his first home run of the season Sunday adding to the CMU score 4-0 during the fifth.

“I just wanted to make good contact depending on where the pitch was. I was able to see a couple fastballs in the zone today that I was able to hit,” Cassin said. “ It felt pretty good to get that first home run out of the way. It was nice to do it at home also.”

The hitting momentum in today’s game came to the team after Cassin’s two-run home run that scored Bramwell.

Junior infielder Caleb Farmer hit his first home run of this season at just the right time in Saturday’s game. The homer gave CMU a 4-3 lead in the fifth as a response to SNHU’s three runs in the top of the inning.

“They were challenging me inside the first game, so I was looking for that and they threw me a slider for a strike and this pitcher has been missing up a lot so I changed my level and was looking for something up and in and that’s where it was and I was fortunate to put a barrel on it.” Farmer said.

Bramwell has had quite a start to his junior season and added to his home run total again Sunday hitting one far out into the bleachers in left field. The two-run home run scored Farmer.

The freshman pitchers had all eyes on them on the chilly Sunday afternoon in Grand Junction. Jared Ure played for the first time since Florida where he had eight unearned runs against him.

Ure made his home debut at Suplizio Stadium pitching six and two-thirds innings. The Eaton, Co. native, had four strikeouts while having faced the SNHU lineup three times through on 78 pitches.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Kannon Handy and freshman right-handed pitcher Jacob Rhoades would finish this one out. Handy came in after Ure for two innings. Handy would walk two and strike three out. Rhoades got the ball for the final out of the game and got his first save as a collegiate pitcher.

Defensive plays were made throughout the weekend that led the Mavericks to sweep the Penmen. Junior infielder Jordan Stubbings made plays all over the diamond to make sure that the CMU secured a win Sunday. Stubbings was a key part of a rundown with Ure making the tag.

The Maverick sweep included a 6-4 win Saturday and a 10-1 win on Sunday.

The Mavericks stay at home as Northwest Nazarene University comes into town for a four-game series that starts Thursday, Feb. 20 at 2:30 p.m.
