How to find a job while studying at CMU

1131

It is the beginning of the semester and students are scrambling to adjust. One question that may be on the minds of some students is ‘Where do I go to look for jobs?’ The answer to this is quite simple.

Career Services, which is located on the first floor of the University Center across from the MavCard office, launched a new job search platform last year called Handshake. It can be accessed from any computer.

All you have to do is login into your MavZone account and locate Handshake under all apps. Click on the link and it will take you directly to it. If you have not used the platform before, you may have to set up your account.

Most importantly, you want to be sure that you have your profile set up to make searching for jobs easier. You can even upload a resume to use when you apply for some of the jobs.

If you are having trouble getting on to Handshake, you can always go to their office and someone would be more than happy to assist you.

“Handshake is a good resource for on campus and off campus jobs as well as internships,” Assistant Coordinator of Career Services Dennis Bailey said.

All jobs that are available on campus will be listed, as well as jobs that are posted from, not only here in Grand Junction, but also nationwide.

Some of the jobs listed you can apply directly through Handshake, but others may have instructions on how to apply. For those on campus jobs that require work study funding, it will tell you in the job information listed.

Career Services does offer other services as well. They have two career fairs each year. These are a great event to attend to speak directly to prospective employers.

Career Services also offers several different workshops during the fall and spring semesters. Below is a list of all the workshops offered by Career Services for this semester.

Even if you are unable to attend any of the workshops, I would still encourage you to take advantage of the services that are offered by Career Services while in attendance here at CMU. You can never be too ready when it comes to preparing for a job!

“The job search process can be daunting, but Career Services is here to help students every step of the way,” Alecia Dembowski, assistant coordinator of Career Services, said.

“We not only provide job search tools like Handshake, but we also assist with resumes and cover letters, graduate school applications, and interviewing skills. Whether you’re looking for an on-campus job, a part-time gig while you’re in school, or that first professional job, we are here to help you be successful in reaching your career goals.”
