A death occurred in Confluence Hall at Colorado Mesa University this morning. As of this morning, few details are known, but the victim is not believed to be a student.
“The Grand Junction Police Department received the reporting party call at about 7:43 this morning,” Grand Junction Police Department Public Information Officer Heidi Davidson said. “We responded to Confluence Hall at CMU campus to investigate a death in the building. The most important messages that we need to get out right now is that this victim is not believed to be a student, and that there is no ongoing threat to the safety of students or faculty on campus.”
Confluence Hall will be closed for the remainder of the day as GJPD investigates the incident.
The incident appears to be connected to damage inflicted on one of the doors of the building, possibly involving a trash can being thrown.
According to a statement from Davidson that Daily Sentinel Crime Reporter Gabrielle Porter read, the death has not yet been identified as homicide, suicide, or natural.
“Classes will be cancelled in this building, it will be closed all day as the investigation is ongoing,” Davidson said. “We will absolutely give out more details as they become available.”
According to CMU Media Relations Director David Ludlam, the school’s director of campus safety contacted the GJPD shortly before 8 a.m. and the investigation launched from there. Further information will be released as it’s discovered.
“We were able to communicate very quickly with students to ensure that classes were cancelled in a timely fashion and we’re going to continue that throughout the rest of the day, communicating information to both faculty and students as it becomes available,” Ludlam said.
