Student employee grief

Colorado Mesa University implemented a change over the summer for student workers. Whether you receive MavWorks or federal or state work study, the new payment schedule has affected us all.

Up until July, those students who have work study could count on receiving their pay every other week on Friday. As of July, the pay schedule had changed. Students now receive their pay on the 15th of the month and on the last day of the month.

The new time cards look the same as the old ones, just the number of days in that pay period has changed. You put in your hours for the 1st through the 15th of the month and then the 16th through the end of the month. This was done to make payroll easier, but it has brought on a lot of grief with student workers.

I, for one, have not liked this change. It was so much easier to know that you were being paid every other Friday. Now, it could be a Sunday when you are paid. Although you can be paid early depending upon if payroll has the funds deposited prior to that.

Ironically, if you really think about it, you are still only being paid twice a month. So, as students, why are we having so much grief with this change? Like with other things, we are human and don’t like to deal with changes like this.
