Here is an overview of news and events Mavericks can look forward to around Colorado Mesa University (CMU) going into Spring 2022.
Mavericks will have plenty of opportunities to support their sport’s teams. Men’s and women’s basketball, hockey and wrestling are entering the last stretch of their seasons. Be sure to catch the Women’s and Men’s Basketball Teams taking on Colorado School of Mines at Brownson Arena on Feb. 19.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse, golf, tennis, softball and baseball, and track and field all start their seasons in the spring as well. Opening days for baseball and softball are Feb. 17 and 26 respectively. Dates and locations for all athletic games and events can be found on cmumavericks.com/calendar.
CMU is going to completely rebuild Robinson Theater. Built in 1968, Robinson has served the CMU community for over 50 years.
“Robinson served us well for over 50 years, but it’s a tired, old facility. We were having a bunch of deferred maintenance and problems. I mean, a building that old needs some love. The architects and facilities people have told us that that probably is a building that’s not salvageable, that the best approach is actually to tear it down and build a new one,” CMU President John Marshall said. “We want to put a flag around Western Colorado to say, ‘We want to build something here.’ That’s not just a university asset, but a regional and community asset.”
According to Marshall, CMU wants to capitalize on the lack of an outstanding performing arts space, something one could find in Salt Lake City and Denver. CMU strives to serve the larger community and hopes to further promote performing arts throughout the entire Western Slope with the completion of the project.
CMU Theatre will be featuring “The Spongebob Musical” at Robinson Theater. There will be 7 shows between Thursday, March 3rd and Saturday, March 12th; tickets are free for CMU students.
The CMU Music Department will be presenting multiple shows throughout the semester such as the Orchestra Concert on Mar. 9, the Wind Symphony Concert on Mar. 16 and the Classical Guitar & Jazz Piano Trio on May 3rd. Recitals and other events will be located at the Moss Performing Arts Center.
On Wednesday Feb. 9, CMU will host its monthly Cultural Cafe in Tomlinson Library. CMU student Mahlet Mamo will highlight the culture of her home country, Ethiopia.
Not long after is our highly anticipated Spring Break, spanning from Saturday, Mar. 19 to Monday, Mar. 28.
After break, the CMU Math Department will present the 24th Annual Math Extravaganza in the University Center (UC) on Mar. 31. Faculty and students run Math Extravaganza to showcase upper level math to local high school students.
The UC will also host the Mav Awards, an annual event run by the Associated Student Government. The event is invite-only in the UC-Meyer Ballroom. Mav Awards recognizes outstanding CMU community and staff members.
Things may start to look a little bit different around campus as the months go on. Firstly, the school hopes to complete its new baseball complex next to Hamilton Recreation Center sometime before the end of the spring season.
Secondly, the school plans to begin two major projects at the conclusion of the Spring. CMU is renovating the Maverick Pavilion adjacent to Hamilton Recreation Center.
The Maverick Pavilion and the Hamilton Recreation Center will be connected via sky-bridge that will connect to the second floor track. They will also be adding four new sports-purpose courts and baseball/softball batting cages for the variety teams.
Final exams are scheduled from Monday, May 16 to Thursday, May 19. Graduation will take place on May 21.
