Mavericks win on opening day

The Mavericks were able to secure a 15-5 win at home as they continue to dominate offensively . 

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) continued to be consistent with the bats as they scored 15 runs on 19 hits in their first game against Montana State University- Billings (MSUB). 

The Yellowjackets got to senior right handed pitcher Ryan Day in the first inning as James Anderson hit a big three run home run to give his team a four run lead.Tyler Godfrey singled in a run early in the inning. 

The bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning and CMU really capitalized on the line drive throughout the game. 

Senior shortstop Chase Hamilton had himself a day at the plate as he went 3-4 with four runs batted in (RBI). In the bottom of the fifth inning, Hamilton was able to double down the left field line to score sophomore infielder Harrison Rodgers and junior designated hitter Haydn McGeary. 

McGeary scored on Hamilton’s single in the seventh. McGeary went 4-4 with two RBIs.

A home run by senior catcher Spencer Bramwell put the Mavericks up by two in the third inning. Bramwell went 2-4 and was able to score two runs. Rodgers, senior outfielder Johnny Carr and junior outfielder Conrad Villafurte also went 2-4 on the day. 

After having a weekend where he hit six home runs, senior infielder Caleb Farmer continued to be strong at the plate. He went 2-5 with three RBIs. Farmer hit a triple to left center field in the first to score Matt Turner. 

He collected two more RBIs in the second with a single through the left side. Bramwell and Carr scored on the play. 

On the defensive side of the game, Rodgers and Farmer both had solid plays in the field throughout the game. Rodgers had two assists and three putouts. Farmer commanded the corner as he made multiple strong throws across the diamond that resulted in outs at first. 

On the mound, Day got the start and was able to work through four string innings. After a rough first inning Day was able to settle down on the mound and struck out four. 

Sophomore right handed pitcher Gage Edwards came out of the bullpen and only allowed two base runs through three innings. Right handed pitcher Blake Rohm closed the game out for the Mavericks. 

CMU will continue their home series with MSUB on Feb.18 at 11:30 a.m at Canyon View Park.
