Something is brewing in The Point

Students can expect to see changes at The Point in the near future. The Point, located in the University Center, is a place for students to play pool, watch sports and lounge around with alcohol on an otherwise dry campus.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) administration is currently working with Sodexo and students to gather ideas for the revamp before they start implementing changes.

“So far, there have been discussions between CMU staff and students about revamping the space to better meet the needs of the student body, a randomized focus group made of current students, as well as a survey that reached over 1,500 individuals,” CMU Director of Public Relations Kelsey Coleman said. 

While there is no set plan available to report, students have made suggestions such as serving a wider selection of food and including table service. This could mean getting a meal and drinks delivered right to the table. 

The changes will not only attract more student attention, but the community as well. Along with that, parents will have a place on campus to relax while visiting during busy weekends. 

“I do think it would be cool to start having watch parties at The Point. [They should] make it like a sports bar, where they show all the NFL games & MMA fights. Those watch parties [could be] really big,” senior sports management major Bethany Jones said. 

Students who are interested in giving their ideas to the project are still able to reach out. Vice President of Student Services Jody Diers is facilitating communication about the project. Those who have suggestions can reach out to Diers at jmdiers@coloradomesa.edu with the subject line “The Point Revamp.”

While there is no timeline for the project, there will be plenty of updates to come as the revamp gets off the ground. Students will be able to watch changes in real-time as they occur. 

“We’re in the preliminary phase of the project and need to get further insight to determine what changes are needed to have the greatest impact on student retention. We look forward to more conversations and welcome input from students, faculty and staff,” Coleman said.
