The Colorado Mesa University women’s soccer team experienced their third loss of the season after being upended by Metro State-Denver on Friday night in a 2-1 overtime contest.
The Mavericks were just simply outplayed. The Roadrunners outshot the Mavericks 23-8 with twelve shots to the goal while the Mavericks only had three. The one place that the Mavericks were not outplayed on the field was the goalie box. Mesa goalkeeping had 10 saves while Metro only had two.
CMU arrived back home to Walker field Friday night in their second RMAC game of the season and were trying to rebound after losing to Colorado School of Mines while MSU-D was trying to do the exact same after their defeat to CSU-Pueblo.
“Our mindset is always a winning mindset. We learn from previous games but we don’t dwell on past games results.” Head Coach Dani Thurman said.
The Roadrunners got on the board first with a goal by Paloma Teran at the eight-minute mark. MSU-D would continue to attack the goal but Kamrie Gunderson protected the net well after the first goal as the redshirt sophomore had ten saves on the night.
Eighty minutes into the game the Mavericks would finally find their way to the goal and it was Madison Rasimas who put the Mavericks on the board. It was her second goal of the season and also had her sixth point which leads the team.
“Getting goals early is always a good thing and gives your team confidence and that little bit of “edge” over the opponent,” Thurman said.
The game would eventually go into double overtime and the last time the Mavericks faced double OT, it came out in their favor, this time not so much. Nayeli Baez found Arantxa Melendez who got the ball to the goal to seal the deal for Metro.
The Mavericks will face another tough opponent in their matchup on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. when the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs comes to town. CMU is still looking for their first home conference win.
