The Maverick Recreation Center is a building that offers quite a few features: a very up-to-date workout facility, an Olympic-sized pool, basketball and racquetball courts, Brownson arena and even some classrooms. However, there is nowhere for a meal or hearty snack.
There is Juice Junction, run by Hamilton Rec Center, but a smoothie takes a certain kind of mood in order to enjoy. I don’t want a smoothie when it is snowing outside and, although they carry a few snacks, these are nothing that hold any substance.
Some argue that students should just walk over to the University Center and buy something from the multiple venues; however, that is a 10-minute ordeal. When I heard that a new eatery had opened in the Mav Center, I was very excited. The Snack Shop offers a wide variety of foods: bagels, muffins, wraps, coffee, sandwiches and some other appealing munchies.
When I arrived at the counter, I peered at the baked goods in the glass case. The guy behind the counter informed me that the muffins I was eyeing were from “My Favorite Muffin,” and I was sold.
I bought an apple cinnamon muffin and a coffee. Both were very reasonably priced and delicious. The muffin was very soft and fresh and the coffee had a good flavor. Perhaps the coffee could have been a tad warmer, but to give them the benefit of the doubt, I was their first customer of the day.
The counters were very clean and the napkin holders were full. This could be because there were three employees working behind the counter, ensuring customer satisfaction.
It was perfect because I always have to go through the Mav Center to use a computer lab and that’s when I checked them out. I didn’t have to go out of my way at all and also didn’t have to sell out as far as quality and taste are concerned.
As we know most college students are in a perpetual state of rush and The Snack Shop was very efficient in getting my order prepared. Everyone working was very friendly and told me they have high expectations for the business.
I was able to munch on my muffin for the next hour at work because it was so large. I will definitely be visiting again sometime this week. Maybe next time I will get lunch, a wrap or sandwich.
The Snack Shop is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Check them out and let them know how they’re doing.
