For those that don’t know, Mav Month is the special event held for the entirety of October. During Mav Month, several shops on Main Street and community stores offer special discounts to customers with a MavCard; making a trip off campus as a broke college student relatively affordable.

From the Gelato Junction to the Fat Cat Pottery, the options for discounted goods and services are numerous; however, some are a tad more interesting than others, so I will give my top three choices from my short stint on the Main.

For starters, let’s get a little ethnic with some Spanish and Mexican food over at MX Tapas. Their sale offers their typical lunch menu, where you may mix and match two of four items to eat, with each plate coming with rice and beans, for nine bucks. There is also free chips and salsa. We all know everything tastes better when it’s free, so that’s a huge plus.

The restaurant is quite fancy and has a comfortable feel to it, so date night in October has already been found, you’re welcome. The food was pretty good and the service was the same, the food isn’t pathetically small either, so there is some bang for your buck.

The next store takes us to the amazing atmosphere of the Triple Play Records. This is the one stop shop for music, posters, frisbee golf, Baja jackets and many more vintage items. Triple Play Records has, hands down, been my favorite music shop I’ve ever been into (granted that I’ve only been to Target and Goodwill for music).

They are offering ten percent off during Mav Month, so that one album by Bob Marley, just might be in your price range with the discount. I’ve personally got a rad Jimi Hendrix poster up in my room and it sure won’t be coming down.

Last on the list is the relaxed and soothing shop that is Grand Valley Books. They offer the ten percent discount as well; however, the advantage to how the store works are why it makes my top list. For starters, the store has a giant plethora of books. From classics to New York Times bestsellers, this store has got it all.

There is also a program installed that allows you to bring in finished books and turn them in for store credit towards a different book. There is a unique feel to this store that you wouldn’t get at Barnes and Noble or Walmart.

Some honorable mentions are Colorado Baby and Gear Junction. Gear Junction is, simply put, a really cool store to go to if you like outdoor stuff. However, they are a conscription shop, so the inventory depends on who is selling their stuff.

Colorado Baby, while I have no need for it right now, (and hopefully won’t for a while) offers a free Colorado flag sticker with a purchase. I just might have to buy a rattle so that I can fill some empty sticker real estate on my Nalgene. I’ve got a Colorado bottle and I know that it can fit at least three more free stickies.

So there you have it, the stops on Main Street that could be worth your while during Mav Month.
