It was domination through and through as The Colorado Mesa University men’s lacrosse team beat Notre Dame de Namur (NDNU) 30-5 on Friday night. CMU was led by freshman attackmen Jason Kauo who had four goals and two assists on the day. The Mavericks, on the day, would have 16 different scorers.

CMU came out energized and struck first just a minute and a half into the game as redshirt-freshman Mikey Blais put a rocket past NDNU goalie Garrett Netter. The Mavericks would score five unanswered goals until the Argonauts scored for their first goal on the day with four minutes left in the first quarter. Just thirty seconds later CMU answered back with a goal of their own to put them up 6-1 to end the first.

Senior midfielder Brandon Wilson got the scoring started for the Mavericks just a minute and twenty seconds into the second quarter. CMU would take the first goal of the quarter and go on a six-goal run going deep into the second. NDNU’s Michael Haas ended the run with four minutes left in the quarter to bring the score to 12-2.

Consequently, four minutes just was too much time for the Mavericks as they would score three more unanswered goals to end the half.

CMU stayed hot in the second half as well. Senior midfielder Jack Griffin would open it up as he ripped one past Netter, and his team followed Griffin’s lead and they would pour in four more goals. NDNU’s Jacob Mcfarland would end the run with nine minutes left in the quarter putting a goal past redshirt sophomore goalie Nick Wilson to bring the score to 20-3. But just like it was the whole game up to this point, CMU responded again by putting up another five unanswered goals to end the third.

Five more goals in favor of the defending RMAC champs would be racked up in the fourth to bring the total on the day to 30.

Let’s list the 16 goals scorers to bring it all together. Matt Funkhouser, Kyle O’Brien, Jake Keyes and Mikey Blais had three goals for CMU while Kauo led the team with four. Surd, Wilson and Johnny Cary added two goals each of their own.

Jack Griffin, Beau Lansdown, Carter Compton, Remi Reeves, Michael Dasch Jr., Ben Austin, Elijah Chapa and Flynn Ernest all chipped in with one goal.

On the day CMU had 60 shots, 48 shots-on-goal and 42 groundballs as they just dominated all facets of the game. The Mavericks only gave up 13 SOG and had eight saves.

The Maverick defense dominated NDNU’s offense for 60 minutes and suffocated any chances that they had, and their defense fueled their offense which is the best way to win.

The second game of the back-to-back weekend games will take place on Saturday against Whittier College at 1 p.m.
