Mavericks outscore Cowgirls on Friday

Ten was the magic number for the Mavericks Friday afternoon.

The Colorado Mesa University (CMU) softball team scored ten runs against the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU)  in the first two games of a four game series.

Redshirt sophomore third baseman Nicole Christensen started things off for the Mavericks with a solo shot off of pitcher Samantha Gamboa. Christensen’s home run was not the only time the Mavericks scored in the second.

With the bases full of mavericks, redshirt sophomore outfielder Lauren Wedman walked allowing redshirt senior first baseman Sarah Staudle the opportunity to job doen 60 feet and touch home.

Another big bat in the Mavericks lineup was next up in redshirt sophomore Ellie Smith and on the first pitch she was able to hit the ball deep to left field. With the grand slam by Smith, CMU was up 6-0.

The Maverick scoring continued as another big RBI opportunity presented itself to Wedman in the fourth. Coming up with the bases loaded again, Wedman with a full count tripled to right center and cleared the bases.

Smith doubled straight into left field as Wedman scored the Mavericks final run.

CMU’s bat did not slow down in the second game.

Wedman tripled once again in the second inning and allowed redshirt senior outfielder Brooke Doumer to score.

By the time the second inning was over the Mavericks were on top 4-0.

In the top half of the fourth inning, NMHU cut the Mavericks lead to two as they were able to have two runners cross home.

Smith doubled again to score Wedman, Doumer and redshirt sophomore Ashley Bradford in the bottom half of the inning. Redshirt freshman outfielder Drew Sims got the opportunity on a throwing error to score and did.

Christensen stepped up to the batter’s box with freshman catcher Ally Distler on third and hit her second home run of the day giving her team the 10-2 advantage.

The Cowgirls weren’t going to give up that easily though. Carlee Gonzalez came up with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning and hit a grand slam to put four more on the board.

That wouldn’t be enough though as they still could not come out on top.

Christensen, Wedman and Smith combined for 17 RBIs on the day. Christensen also went 5-8 at the plate through the two games.

The Mavericks pitchers were dominant in the circle as redshirt junior pitcher Paige Adair threw a complete game moving to 9-0 on the season. Adair threw seven strikeouts, had no walks and one earned run.

In the second game redshirt sophomore Shea Mauser ran into some trouble with that grand slam from Gonzalez but other than that pitched a solid game for the Mavericks. Mauser’s final line for Friday includes two strikeouts, two walks, and six earned runs through four and one third innings.

Smith came in to finish things out and finished the last two and two third innings with five strikeouts and only one walk and did not allow any runs.

The Mavericks look to get the series win against NMHU as they will play in another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
