The Colorado Mesa Mavericks routed Johnson and Wales University 52-0 on Tuesday night. The Mavericks were led by freshman attackman Jason Kauo who had six goals and four assists, and a stifling defense that didn’t allow a shot all game. CMU broke the recently-set school and NCAA record for most goals scored in a game.

To start the first quarter, senior midfielder Jack Griffin would open the game up for the Mavericks. After 10:19 in the first the Mavericks wouldn’t score until the three-minute mark when senior midfielder Brandon Wilson would break the dry spell. JWU goalie Austin Cruz had seven saves in the first on 21 shots-on-goal.

The second quarter was opened by sophomore defensive midfielder Jacob Yordy on a man-up opportunity with 13:57 in the period. Later in the quarter, Griffin scored his fourth goal of the day on a man-down possession as he worked his way easily around the double team to the front of the net and the score. The Mavericks led 29-0 at the half, and they had 42 groundballs and were 30-2 on the faceoffs.

Senior Cooper Tokar opened the second half up by winning the faceoff and storming down the middle of the field and ripped a shot by Cruz. In the quarter, three Maverick defenders scored. CMU had 20 shots on goal in the quarter, as they added 15 more goals to their lead.

In the fourth quarter, Kauo opened the scoring up for the Mavericks off a couple of great skip passes to end with a doorstep goal for Kauo. CMU would end up scoring seven more goals before junior midfielder Harrison Evans scored but he was injured on the play, and he ended up needing a stretcher and was taken to the hospital. After the play the referee’s called the game with 7:37 left in the quarter.

The Mavericks had nine players who had three or more goals, with Griffin getting five goals and two assists, followed by senior attackman Beau Lansdown with five goals and three assists. CMU had six players with seven or more total points with Kauo leading the team with 10.
