Mavericks couldn’t keep up will the Lions high scoring offense

The Lions ball movement kept the Mavericks on their heels the entire game as they had 12 assists in the game.

The Mavericks were unable to stop the powerful offense of Lindenwood University (LU) as the Lions avenged their loss from the NCAA Tournament first round. 

The Lions Carly Fedorowski led all scorers with eight points. LU’s ball movement kept the Mavericks on their heels as they assisted 12 of their 19 goals.

Colorado Mesa University’s junior goalie Lula Mitchell started the game and made 11 saves in the game before being taken out with 3:38 left in the game. Sophomore midfielder Ashton Whittle led the Mavericks in scoring with three goals, and one assist. 

The Lions were firing on all cylinders in the first half as they took a 9-3 lead. Fedorowski had one goal and three assists in the first half as she was the focal point of the Lions offense throughout the game.  

LU opened the second half scoring eight unanswered goals in the first eight minutes to take all the momentum in the game. The Mavericks sophomore Cassie Barragan scored the first goal of her CMU career with 19 minutes left in the game. Whittle got loose in the second as scored all three of her goals in the final 11 minutes of the game.

The Lions had four players with three or more points in the game with their ball movement creating chances for everyone.  

The Mavericks lost the ground ball battle by seven as they were outworked on the 50-50 plays.

CMU’s next game will be Feb. 21 at noon against Concordia University – St. Paul.
