The Mavericks rebound with a huge 2-0 win over the UCCS Mountain Lions. The Colorado Mesa University men’s soccer team was on a mission; focusing on not letting their recent loss against Regis define them.

“Friday night was really a poor performance,” CMU Head Coach Andrew Conniff said.“The work rate and the intensity from our group was not very good and that’s what we challenged them to today”

Colorado Mesa University came out fast pace and filled with the passion that was missing last from Friday. The Mavericks knew this was a must-win game and weren’t leaving the pitch without the outcome they wanted.

Goal number one of the afternoon came from midfielder Peter Vandam on a deep solo shot in the 36th minute that drifted straight into the top left half of the cage.

This gave the Mavericks an early 1-0 lead and a slight cushion into halftime.

“This [had] our heart into this, we are committed to getting victories through hard work and through commitment to our teammates,” Conniff said. “ We are an incredibly talented team so if we come out and do those things the talent starts to get displayed and that’s definitely what happened today”.

The Mavericks took this momentum to the second half and continued to play as one unit.

CMU scored once more in the 82nd minute on a quick tap in goal by senior Lawan Abary giving Noah Rosenberg his first assist of the year.

“We know how good [Abary] can be and want more and more from him,” Conniff said. “A little bit of a challenge to him and he stepped up to it and was very good today when he got on”.

With this win the Mavericks progress to 7-2-2 on the season and will travel to Salt Lake City, UT to take on Westminster College on Oct. 18.
