The Colorado Mesa University baseball team found offense hard to come by in the final game of the series against No. 6 Cal Baptist. The Maverick’s bats were silenced by starting pitcher Andrew Bash as they fell by a final score of 8-1.
Senior Chris Ramirez pitched effectively for the Mavericks with 6.0 innings of one-run baseball. Ramirez allowed six hits, one walk and struck out three. Nick Cardinale opened the seventh but failed to record a single out for the Mavericks. Cardinale gave up three runs on one hit, two walks and took the loss.
The Mavericks were held scoreless through six but finally broke through in the seventh when Zach McLeod scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 1-1. After that, it was all Lancers who scored seven unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Matt Whalen and Michael Sears both pitched one-third of an inning for the Mavericks, surrendering two runs apiece.
CMU recorded just four hits in the game, their lowest output so far this season. McLeod was charged with an error in the game. The Mavericks have committed an error in five straight games.
The loss moves the Mavericks to 8-4 on the season.
CMU will head to Lakewood to begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play against Colorado Christian in a doubleheader on Friday and Saturday.
