North Avenue Hall renamed ‘Lucero Hall’

Colorado Mesa University announced today, March 2, that it has renamed North Avenue Hall after Bernice and Levi Lucero, lifelong advocates of the university and the community it resides in.

“I will say to you that we name things on this campus for people who certainly lived, worked here — for a long period of time — and people who have been generous to this institution,” CMU President Tim Foster said in his opening remarks. “And in this instance, people who have been generous to this community.”

Active shooter alert was delayed by software glitch

Reports from the Colorado Mesa University safety alert system were delayed by a software glitch during the active shooter situation that turned out to be a false alarm on Feb. 25.

The safety alert system is designed to provide students with quick and accurate information regarding any potential threats to their safety that occur on or near campus.

While the false alarm itself was caused by a technical malfunction of the sound system, causing noises similar to gunshots to echo through Brownson Arena during a youth volleyball tournament, CMU students were not notified that the possible threat had even occurred and was a false alarm until 1:06 p.m.

Faculty Senate discusses assessment of student learning

The Mar. 1 Faculty Senate meeting involved debate on Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) assessments and increased workloads from pre-approved additions.

Members of the Assessment Committee were present at meeting to discuss two new implementations of assessments required for SLO before the senate voting on approving them. Some departments were exempted from certain SLO aspects because of their demonstrated inability to produce a quantitative literacy outcome.

ASG changes senate and executive requirements

The Associated Student Government discussed the first of three bills to amend their bylaws, which would define basic requirements for any senator and the president, vice president and student trustee.

The first point of contention was regarding the requirements for engineering students to become senators. All senators, with the exception of the Montrose and Western Colorado Community College senators, have to be full-time CMU students.

Alt-right figure Milo Yiannopoulos coming to Grand Junction

Milo Yiannopoulos, a British political commentator and former senior editor for Breitbart News, will be holding a speaking event April 14 at 7:00 p.m at a yet-to-be-announced location in Grand Junction.

It is unknown if Colorado Mesa University will be made the venue for Yiannopoulos’ event at a later date, but CMU spokesperson Dana Nunn said that he has not booked the campus for anything as of yesterday.
