There are many residence halls on campus that are utilized every day for student housing. As Colorado Mesa University grows by campus size and in population, these residence halls begin to feel overcrowded.
“Once you get above about 95% capacity, it feels full, it feels overfull,” Vice President of Student Services John Marshall said. “So for us, you’re constantly playing this accordion game, right when [population] goes up, you get residence halls.”
The current plan for the location is to build a new dorm on the north-western side of the campus, in the same area as both Garfield and Wingate halls. As both are the newer resident halls on campus, the idea is to continue on that same growth plan.
“Right now it’s just in the conceptual phase,” Marshall said. “What it would look like? What’s the right number of beds and what kind of beds? Do we do apartments, semi-apartments, and semi-suites?”
As a new resident hall is still in the conceptual phase, the administration is hopeful that it will be approved soon. They are currently aiming to start building next fall.
