On Saturday, the number one ranked Colorado Mesa University softball squashed Fort Lewis College (FLC) with a total score of 18-0. between the two games. Both games ended in a six-inning mercy rule: the first contest ending 8-0 and the second one being 10-0

Alexandria Dufour shined as the second baseman went 3-3 and knocked in three RBIs while McKenzie Surface allowed only two hits and got her 16th win of the season.

“We did a lot of good things today,” Head Coach Ben Garcia said. “We are excited about the team and what I am really excited about is the athletic ability of the team, the starters and our bench. If someone has a bad game, another will come through.”

The defense and pitching were stellar for the first game against FLC. McKenzie Surface got 11 strikeouts for the game and only allowed two hits against 20 batters. There was only one error in the game, showing yet again the solid defense the Mavericks have built up throughout the perfect season.

The second game had two more runs than the previous, as well as a much larger audience for the team, which in turn fired them up for the home game.

“They love playing at home,” Garcia said. “It was pretty special to be able to play well at home. It got the crowd going and they were so supportive. I think we have the best parent showing in the RMAC, and now there is some community involvement.”

The first score in the second game came in form of an RBI single from Brooke Hodgson and Dufour followed with a run via a fielder’s choice to give the Mavericks the 2-0 lead. The Mavericks exploded in the third with Hodgson scoring on an error, Abby Toller would then hit a double to knock in two runs. Toller ended the second game hitting 3-3 with three RBIs,

Six total Maverick players would each rack up at least one RBI against the Skyhawks in the second game.

Pitching was not short of perfect either. This time, Kimbri Herring threw 11 strikeouts, allowed two hits and faced off against only 17 batters. The defense saw an improved zero errors and really just handed the loss to Fort Lewis.

Overall the day was a slaughter for FCL. The Mavericks truly came out and proved that they are number one for good reason. CMU will attempt to go for their sixth consecutive four-game sweep as they finish off the series against Fort Lewis on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
