Resources for students that many are not aware of

Colorado Mesa University offers many resources to help students through their college careers. However, some of the services are less publicized and consequently less used by students. These are some of the resources either offered by CMU or through services with discounts for students to help you through your education.

Counseling Services:  College is a stressful time for everyone. Whether you need help navigating a serious mental health crisis or just need someone to talk to, CMU offers counseling services at the Student Wellness Center. For all full-time and part-time students, the copay is only five dollars per session. Students can also access health services at You@CMU through their MavZone.

Grand Valley Transit: Students can use their Mavcard to obtain a Grand Valley Transit pass, which will provide them with transportation around Grand Junction. For students without cars on campus, this can be a valuable resource to access businesses in town and make it easier to visit their hometown during breaks. Students can get a pass at the University Center.

Local Student Discounts: Many businesses around Grand Junction offer discounts for students. DoubleTree by Hilton offers a 20% student discount, and many other lodging services in the area offer similar deals. Restaurants like Kannah Creek Brewery also have special events and discounts for students with valid student ID. Many banks offer checking accounts for students with benefits such as reduced fees at ATMs and lower minimum balances. Before eating, staying, or making a purchase using a local service, ask if they have any discounts for CMU students. It will more than likely save you time and money.

Online Discounts: All college students can get discounts on online services that will help them with classes. During their enrollment, students can save 60% on Adobe Creative Cloud, get a free trial of Amazon Prime and get free shipping for textbooks with Amazon Student, and savings on laptops can rack up with discounts through Microsoft, Apple, Best Buy and Dell. While this may not target CMU students specifically, saving money on technology and other academic expenses can help lift the financial burden of attending college.

Get With the Programs: All students are encouraged to attend a wide variety of activities, including athletic programs, arts performances, clubs and social activities, and academic or career services. For incoming freshmen, swiping their Mavcard at these events can help them win prizes, including school gear and scholarships. For all other students, these programs can provide nothing but benefits: social networking, career and academic advice, increased cultural awareness, or just a fun way to take a break from studying.

Both the university and the Grand Valley community offer students a plethora of resources and services to help them navigate college life. Simply look around and you will find plenty of benefits of being a CMU student.
