Colorado Mesa University’s residence halls are nearing full capacity as yearly enrollment grows. However, according to Vice President of Student Services John Marshall, plans are in place for more dorms, ready to be built as soon as they are needed.
In the past ten years, the school has built new dorms about every year, Marshall said. “Wingate we opened two years ago, so we’re kind of on track and our growth has become a little more modest, so it’s slowed down enough that it’s a little more manageable.”
According to Marshall, it was in the university’s plans for Wingate Hall to eventually expand into the horseshoe shape that Garfield Hall is. It will mirror Garfield and create a more closed-in area for the intramural field between the residence halls.
Even as of this semester, numbers will be evaluated and decisions will be made on when residence hall construction may need to proceed. The school will hire as many people as needed to fulfill all current construction needs, according to Marshall, who recalled a year when three buildings were under construction at the same time.
At the present moment, the nearby construction project is that of CMU Hotel, which is right next Confluence Hall. They have broken ground on the project and construction is underway behind the chain link fence with an expected opening date of January, 2020.
