On Thursday, Colorado Mesa University sent out a press release stating the initiation of a women’s wrestling team that will start in the fall of 2018.

This is the first time a women’s wrestling program will ever exist in the history of CMU and will add another element to the attractiveness of the athletic programs at the school.

“As Mavericks, we pride ourselves on not settling for the status quo,” Co-Athletic Director Kris Mort said at CMU’s press release. “The addition of women’s wrestling enables CMU to continue to be a leader in higher education and Division II athletics.”

Women’s wrestling at CMU will be the first of its kind initiated in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, in addition to being added to the less than 50 already existing programs in the U.S.

The already existing wrestling program at CMU was reinstated back in 2006 and has sent one individual to the NCAA Div. II Tournament in nine of the last 11 years since being reinstated.

“We believe in the transformative power of athletics to propel women into positions of power in the future,” CMU President Tim Foster said in CMU’s press release.

An inaugural coach has not been named yet by the university; however, a search for the first-ever coach for the program came into effect back on Feb. 28.
